A Lifetime of Memories in Three Weeks by Jason Bowers

It is difficult to put into words the experience that I have had in Chile for the past three weeks. The people, the food, the surroundings--everything has contributed to a new perspective of the world. This week was full of immersive activities including preparing performers for the English Music Festival, driving north along the coast to visit the small towns affected by the 2010 tsunami, having desserts and coffee at a nationally-known bakery, making music with some fantastically talented students. and celebrating a win for Colegio Concepcion San Pedro in the music festival.

I am so very thankful for the time I was able to spend with the students at the school as well as my collaborating teacher. They have provided so much insight into the process of music making in the Chilean culture as well as the importance of developing close and honest relationships with students and colleagues. Many teachers in the United States could benefit from simply observing the interactions occurring during class changes, in the classroom, and outside of the school environment here in Chile--such wonderful representations of caring people that want the best for each other.

I also have to take the time to recognize and thank my host family. I could not have asked for a better placement. They have been the most caring and supportive group of people during my time here. Despite the fact that they have two seniors twin boys, a daughter at university, and full-time jobs, my host parents have gotten up early everyday to make me breakfast and are constantly checking to make sure that I am happy and comfortable. Their family interactions mirror what I have discussed about relationships in the school. Each member of the family acts as an equal to the other and they are so affectionate and loving in all ways. I am proud and thankful to have had the opportunity to be one of them during my time in Chile. From day one, they have included me as a part of the clan.

Although I miss my loved ones (and especially my pups at home), I will always remember my experiences here in Chile. I am hopeful that our paths will cross again, but I know that the connection will remain either way. Muchas gracias a la gente de Chile!
