Our Last Week in Chile - Lizz Keller

Our time in Chile has gone by quickly! After a weekend lost due to an unfortunate case of food
students lit one end of a row of matches to simulate impulses of a neuron
poisoning, I started my last week in Concepcion. Monday I had a chance to observe a lab class where they learned about the nervous system, but lighting matches on fire (which they very much enjoyed).
Tuesday was my day to shine and finally present the protein synthesis presentation I had been working on for a week and a half! After thoroughly reviewing protein synthesis while creating my lesson, I was prepared to teach the students. I gave them a 45 minute PowerPoint followed by an animation and a worksheet. Some were more attentive than others, and some I´m sure understood more than others since I gave the presentation in English, but overall I think it went well and the kids learned more about RNA (ARN in Spanish) and how proteins are made!

Javier, the biology teacher I have been working with
Wednesday we had our ending celebratory dinner with the teachers, complete with lot of delicious meat and a good time to all socialize together before we have to head out.

He really liked to dig!

planting out second tree
Tree planting today with the kids went great! They seemed to have a lot of fun being outside, using their hands, and getting into the dirt. It would be interesting to see how our little 3-year-old saplings fare over the years and if they grow into big, beautiful trees by the lake.
