Back in Chile! (Julia)

I can't believe it's almost Friday! I am really happy to be back in this beautiful country. This time, I am in a different city, and many of the differences are apparent from the get-go. So far so good - we're having a great time!

To begin, my host family is awesome! There are four of them: Lohen (the dad), Ian (23 and studying law), Pablo (18 and studying history) and my buddy Ivania (almost 14, and goes to the school here). They welcomed me on Saturday. We ate delicious pizza for once (a light later-in-the-evening dinner) and on Sunday, we took advantage of the beautiful weather and went to Playa Lenga (Lenga Beach) in Lenga, a small fishing town that has a few seafood restaurants. We ate lots and lots of food (as is customary at lunch since it is the main meal of the day) and walked on the beach a bit afterwards.

The week at school began with a warm welcome and a lot of information. It's Thursday now, and I've been in classrooms for two days. I've been working with the English classes between 7th and 12th grade. I got to co-teach both days with my teacher pair, Francisco, who the kids call "Teacher." He is very well-known at the school and has been teaching here for a long time. Today we listened to and evaluated some 12th grade English presentations about the environment. This group was awesome, and described a lot of environmental issues in Chile (which are very similar to those in the gulf).

The last thing I did today was work with Jason (vocal genius/teacher/LSU classmate) with two students for the English song festival. It felt a bit like an episode of The Voice and the girls sing really, really well.

Tomorrow, we go to the Universidad de Concepcion and around the city! Hasta luego!
