Chile has been very good to me thus far. The school is full of welcoming faces and there's never a dull moment if you don't want it to be. I've been working at the Huertos campus which is 1st through 4th grade. Which means that my whole day is way cuter than I knew it could be. The professora that I am paired with is named Angelica and even though she doesn't speak english, we have been communicating and having a really good time. We are doing natural sciences and this week has been on physics. These kids are making power points and doing presentations and I remember when I was nine I played with mud a lot. I've been very impressed by this school. The teaching methods and general atmosphere of the place is very condusive to not only learning but also community. And I have been welcomed into that community without hesitation.
My family is also amazing. Only one of them speaks any English so I've gotten to know them through my little bit of Spanish and they're actions. Whenever I see family being family I keep saying to myself "There are some things that are the same everywhere". I've gotten some good bonding time with each of them and it's been a learning experience trying to figure out how to divide my time and still get a lot of quality out of the interactions. Especially because of the language barrier. I met my host father's mother last night and she asked if I speak Spanish and I said "Mas y mas cada dia" more and more each day.
We were at a birthday party for my host father's brother and I was worried that I could't talk to anyone but I got by really well. One aunt and one cousin knew a good bit of english and together we had a really good time at the dinner table. I felt like family at this party more than I have at many of my own family's gatherings. I was invited to two more parties, asked to marry a cousin, and told by Abueltia that I can come live with her.
So all in all, I think it's going pretty well.
