Oh, the Places You`ll Go

Who knew that I, Dedrick Ford, would be in Concepcion, Chile spending part of my summer studying abroad with random friends who would soon become my colleagues and close friends 5,000 miles away. This trip has been exciting and a little scary at the same time, however my host family has made sure that I feel welcomed and comfortable as I possibly could be. I arrived on Saturday, a week later than everyone else, but I can say with certainty that I am making up for the lost time. Here is the first few hours of my arrival in Concepcion that started with a family lunch/small celebration of my arrival and a picture of my host father`s birthday party on Sunday.
The week got started off fast with school and joining in on the daily activities that my host family are accustomed to. Due to me not knowing a lot of Spanish we had to get accustomed to talking through body language and other nonverbal cues. Here my youngest brother, Jose was amused by something that I had said at the supermarket. e has certainly made my stay thus far interesting and fun.

Wednesday we visited  Chiflon del Diablo where we were able to get a first hand view of how miners that once occupied this mine lived. It was a surreal experience as our tour guide was once a miner there. He explained the difficulties that over 3000 miners experienced after losing there jobs there. He also shared some of the sacrifices that his family made by risking their lives working in the mine for over 30 years. Below are some of the pictures that I took throughout the tour and of course my new amigo, Daniel.
