LeAnn's Chile Trip: Week One

Hola, welcome to my "LSU In Concepcion, Chile 2016"  blog!

My name is LeAnn Grady and I'm currently a student at Louisiana State University (LSU) studying Elementary Education and History. To widen my perspective as a future educator, I chose to complete a study aboard experience in Concepcion, Chile. The program offers LSU students the opportunity to live in Chile for one month with a host family while teaching at either an elementary school named Campus Huertos or its partnering high school Campus Villa. Over the next few weeks, I'll be sharing my journey in Concepcion through this blog.
                                                    My Chilean Familia

While here, I'll be staying with the Hernandaz family; Juan Ignacio Senior (father), Sandra (mother), Juan Ignacio Junior (son, 23), and Manuela (daughter, 12). They've welcomed me, a stranger, into their home with open arms.  Over the last week, we've bonded over meals, karaoke, movies, and trips to other areas in Concepcion. I've noticed the Hernandaz family  enjoy spending most of their time with each other. Almost everything we do, we do as a group. I've became accustom to the togetherness the family displays. One could simply get lost in the love available here.

Fabiola: English teacher at the elementary school

When I'm not hanging out with my new family, I teach 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students English with the head teacher Fabiola Saez. Fabiola has been teaching English to students for 25 years and I am honored to work with her during this journey. She has continuously encouraged me this past week to lead the classes through exercises and new vocabulary words. I must admit I was and still am nervous to teach the students due to the language barrior that exists in the class (my Spanish is terrible/nonexistent). Hopefully, as I spend more time with each class, I will become more comfortable and confident in my teaching ability.

I hope you've enjoyed my first blog post, until next week, adios.
